উত্তর : - আশাপূর্ণাদেবীর ইজ্জত গল্পে প্রধান নারী চরিত্র সুমিত্রা মনে মনে আলোচ্য উক্তিটি করেছে। বাসন্তীবালা গরীব মানুষ সে সারাদিন কাজ করে সংসার চালায়। তাই তার মনে হয়েছিল যে, রাতে যদি কাজ পায় তাহলে সে তার সংসারকে ভালোভাবে চালাতে পারবে। বাসন্তী সেইরকম একটি সুযোগ পেল বড়ো লোকের বাড়িতে দিনরাত খেটে অনেক টাকা বেশি পাওয়ার কাজ পেল। কিন্তু সমস্যা হয়ে দাঁড়ালো তার মেয়েকে নিয়ে। মেয়েকে সে বাড়ি রেখে কিভাবে রাতে কাজ করতে যাবে। কারণ সে বস্তি এলাকায় থাকে। বস্তির সামাজিক পরিবেশ ভালো নয়। আবার বড়োলোকের বাড়িতেও জয়ীকে রাখতে রাজি হলো না। বাসন্তী তাই লোকের বাড়ি বাড়ি ঘুরে তার মেয়েকে আশ্রয়ের জন্য প্রার্থনা চাইলো। সে তার মেয়েকে নিয়েই বাড়ি বাড়ি ঘুরে ছিল। কিন্তু কারও মনেই মনুষ্যত্বের বোধ জেগে ওঠেনি। শেষ পর্যন্ত সে হতাশ হয়ে পড়ে। বাসন্তী ভাবে মেয়েকে যদি একা রাতে বাড়িতে রেখে যাওয়া হয়, তাহলে তার আর ইজ্জত থাকবে না। 

     কাজের সুবাদেই সুমিত্রা নামে এক গৃহবধূর সঙ্গে তার পরিচয় হয়। তাই তার কথা মনে করে তার বাড়ির দিকে যায়। বাসন্তী জানতো সুমিত্রা শিক্ষিত, সে তার মেয়ের ইজ্জত রক্ষার ব্যাপারটি বুঝতে পারবে। তাই সুমিত্রার কাছে আশ্রয়ের জন্য গিয়েছিল। কিন্তু সুমিত্রার রূপ অসাধারণ তাই ভয়ে তাকে কেউ আশ্রয় দিতে চায় না। কারণ, কোনো বিপদে পড়বে এই ভেবে। সুমিত্রার মনে মানবিকতা বোধ থাকায় সে জয়ীকে রাখার প্রস্তাব গ্রহণ করে। সুমিত্রার মতে, বাসন্তী জয়ীকে নিয়ে আশ্রয় প্রার্থনা করলে মায়া উদ্রেকের জন্য যে অনুরোধ করতে গিয়েছিল তা দাবা চালের মতো কৌশল । অতীব সুন্দরী তাই ভয়েতে কেউ রাজি হয়নি বলে সুমিত্রা সেই দাবার চালে ভুল হয়েছে বলে মনে মনে ভাবে 豉

     হিন্দু সমাজে যেহেতু পুরুষই কর্তা তাই তার আদেশ ও অনুমতি নিয়ে কাজ করা উচিত। পরিবারে স্ত্রীর থেকে স্বামীর আধিপত্য বেশী। 

     স্বামীর মতামত না নিয়ে কোনো কিছু করতে পারে না। নারীদের সেই ক্ষমতা থাকে না যে কোনটা ভালো কোনটা খারাপ বিচার করা। এক্ষেত্রে শুধুমাত্র পুরুষরাই জ্ঞানবুদ্ধির অধিকারি। স্ত্রীর স্বাধীন ইচ্ছা, মতামত, আত্মস্বাধীনতা 'ও মর্যাদাবোধ মধ্যবিত্ত শিক্ষিত পুরুষতান্ত্রিক সমাজে স্বীকৃতি লাভ করতে পারে না। তাই মহীতোষেরও ক্ষেত্রে এরূপ অবস্থা হয়েছে। মহীতোষ মানতে চায় না পরিবারের বাইরে নারীর মানবিক অনুভূতিবোধ ও সামাজিক দায়িত্ববোধ আছে।   

    বাসন্তীর মেয়েকে তার বাড়িতে থাকার ব্যবস্থার কথা বললে, মহীতোষের মনে নানা সন্দেহের আবির্ভাব হয়। তার ধারণা বস্তির এলাকার মানুষেরা ভালো নয়। তাদের আবার ইজ্জত কিছু আছে। তারা তো ছোটোলোক। সেখানকার ছেলেরা তো নোংরা ভাষা, নোংরা গালিগালাজ, চিৎকার চেঁচামেচি করবেই। তাই বাসন্তীকে নিয়ে মহীতোষ ভাবে তার কোনো বদ মতলব থাকতে পারে। কারণ, এইসব ঘরের মেয়েরা কোনোরূপ কারণ দেখিয়ে অর্থ আদায় করে। তাই বাসন্তীকে মহীতোষ বলে তার মেয়েকে রাখার দায়িত্ব নিতে পারবে না। এতে সুমিত্রা গভীর আর্তবেদনায় বিপর্যস্ত হয়। মহীতোষ অহংকারী, দাম্ভিক পুরুষ। তাই সে স্ত্রী কাছেও নিজের আধিপত্য খোয়াতে চান না। স্বামীর উন্নত
