উত্তর:-  আশাপূর্ণাদেবীর 'ইজ্জত' ছোটোগল্পের আরেকটি প্রধান চরিত্র হলো সুমিত্রা। সুমিত্রা শিক্ষিত মধ্যবিত্ত সমাজের গৃহবধূ। লেখিকার সুমিত্রার চরিত্রের মধ্যে দিয়ে পুরুষাশিত মধ্যবিত্ত সমাজে নারীর অবস্থান সম্বন্ধে দৃষ্টি দিয়েছেন। শিক্ষিত পরিবারের গৃহবধূ সুমিত্রা। তার হৃদয়ে ছিল মানবিকতা । 

    তাই বস্তির ছোটোলোকের মেয়ে জেনেও সুমিত্রা বাসন্তীর মেয়েকে রাখতে রাজি হয়। বাসন্তী চারমাস আগে কাজের সুবাদে সুমিত্রার সঙ্গে পরিচয় করে। তার আচার ব্যবহার দেখে তাকে ভালো মানুষ বলে মনে হয়েছিল। তাই তার বাড়িতে গিয়েছিল তার মেয়ের আশ্রয়ের জন্য। বাসন্তী তার মেয়েকে সুমিত্রার বাড়ি নিয়ে যাওয়ায় সে দেখে যে তার মেয়ে নম্র ও ভদ্র। কিন্তু কেউ আশ্রয় দেয়নি তার মেয়েকে আগুনের খাপ্পা ভেবে। এই কথা সুমিত্ৰা ভাবে।

    সুমিত্রা সৌন্দর্যের পূজারি। তাই তার মেয়েকে দেখে সে সাজিয়ে গুজিয়ে সুন্দর করে রাখবে বলে ভেবে নেয়। তার নিজের লালফুলের পেঁজা জর্জেট বা নীল রং-এর শাড়ি বা ন্যাতানো ছাপা শাড়ি তাকে পড়িয়ে রাখবে। জয়ীর মতো সুন্দরী মেয়ে বস্তিতে পরে আছে ভেবে সুমিত্রার খুব মায়া জাগে। আবার সুমিত্রা এও ভাবে সুন্দরী মেয়েকে সাজালে সে আরও সুন্দরী হয়ে ওঠবে। তাতে আরও বিপদ ঘটতে পারে। সুমিত্রা সমাজ ও নিজের পরিবারের অবস্থান সম্পর্কে সচেতন নয়। তাও সে কথা দেয় তার মেয়েকে রাখবে। কিন্তু এই বলে, দাদাবাবু আসলে তাকে জিজ্ঞাসা করা না পর্যন্ত আমি সম্পূর্ণ কথা দিতে পারবো না । এই সুন্দরী মেয়ে বস্তিতে থাকলে, বস্তির ছেলেরা তার ইজ্জত লুণ্ঠন করার চেষ্টা করবে। এতে সুমিত্রার মানসিকতায় একটি আঘাত লাগে । সে ভাবে একটু চেষ্টা করলে হয়তো ঐ সুন্দরী মেয়েটাকে সাপের গ্রাস থেকে বাঁচানো যাবে। সুমিত্রা বাসন্তীকে একটি হলেও আশ্বস্তি করে। তাই বাসন্তী সুমিত্রাকে ‘সাক্ষাৎ ভগবতী’ বলে অভিহিত করে। সুমিত্রা তার স্বামীকে না জেনে কথা দেওয়ায় তাদের দুজনের মধ্যে মনোমালিন্য শুরু হয়ে যায়। সুমিত্রা তার স্বামীকে বোঝায় যে, ‘মেয়েটাকে নেকড়ের মুখে ফেলতে পারবে না'। জগতে এরকম অনেক ঘটনায় ঘটছে। কিন্তু বাসন্তী যেহেতু সাহায্যে জন্য এসেছে তাই তাকে সাহায্য করাটাই উচিত।

    কিন্তু মহীতোষ এই ব্যাপারটাকে সোজাভাবে ভাবতে পারেনি। সে ভেবে ছিল বস্তির ছোটোলোক মেয়ে তাদের উপর কলঙ্ক চাপিয়ে টাকা আদায় করবে। আবার বলে বাসন্তীর মেয়েকে যখন একা রাখতে অসুবিধা তখন তার কাজে বেরানোর দরকার কী? একটা ঝিয়ের মেয়ের বিয়ের জন্য কতটাকাই বা দরকার, যে টাকার জন্য কাজ করতে হবে। বাসন্তী গরীব হওয়ায় গরীবের প্রতি যে এত অবজ্ঞা সুমিত্রা তা অসহ্য বলে মনে করে। সুমিত্রা তার স্বামীকে ব্যঙ্গ করতেও ছাড়ে না। সে বলে, বাসনমাজা ঝিয়ের কাছে সংসারে কোনো ক্ষমতাই তার নেই। এই উক্তির মাধ্যমে মহীতোষকে অবহেলার কথা বোঝায়। সুমিত্রা বলে বাসন্তী যদি বস্তিতে ভালোকরে খোঁজ করে, তাহলে দেখতে পাবে বস্তির মধ্যে মহীতোষের চেয়ে অনেক ভালো লোক আছে। তাদের অনেক বেশী মনুষ্যত্ব আছে। সুমিত্রা বাসন্তীর মেয়েকে রাখার জন্য যে অপমানিত হয়েছিল তাতে সে বুঝতে পেরেছিল পায়ের নীচে শক্তমাটি তার নেই। তার নিজস্ব স্বাধীনতা বলে কিছুই নেই ৷ পুরুষাশিত সমাজে পুরুষের হাতেই সব ক্ষমতা অর্পিত হয়।

     সুমিত্রা বাসন্তীকে কথা দিয়েও কথার খেলাপ করায় সে মনের দিক থেকে আঘাত পায় ৷ সে নিজেকে মনে করে মধ্যবিত্ত সংসারের পরাধীনতার নাগপাশে বন্দিনী এক নারী। এই পুরুষাশিত সমাজে নারীরা কিভাবে লাঞ্ছিত হয় তা সুমিত্রার চরিত্রের মধ্য দিয়ে ফুটে উঠে।
