উত্তর:- রমেশ প্রবাস থেকে বহু দিন পরে কুঁয়াপুর গ্রামে ফিরে এসেছে। বহুদিন পরে এসে ভেবেছিল গ্রামের অনেক উন্নতি হয়েছে। কিন্তু এসে দেখে গ্রামের অবক্ষয়ও হয়েছে। গ্রামের মানুষের দুঃখ, দুর্দশা দেখে রমেশের মন কেঁদে ওঠে। গ্রামের মাতব্বরদের অত্যাচারে গ্রামবাসী ক্ষিপ্ত ও তারা শোষিত রমেশ ফিরে এসে দেখে তার জমিদার একশো বিঘে বর্ষার জলে ভর্তি সব ফসল নষ্ট হয়ে গেছে তাতে গ্রামের চাষিদের অবস্থা খুব খারাপ হয়ে দাড়িয়েছে। তাই বর্ষার জল জমি থেকে খাল কেটে বের করার ব্যবস্থার জন্য যখন বেণীর কাছে সাহায্যের জন্য যাওয়া হয় তখন তারা রমেশকে কোন সাহায্য করেনি ও চাষিদের আর্থিক ক্ষতির কথা ভাবেননি। তখন রমেশ রেগে গিয়ে একাই খাল কেটে জল বের করে রমা ভেবেছিল এতে রমেশের মনের জোর খুব বেশি। তাই সে এরকম কাজ করতে পেরেছে। কিন্তু এদিকে রমা বেণী ঘোষালের পক্ষ তাই রমেশ যখন এই কাজ করে তখন সে খুব রুষ্ট হয়ে যায়।

    আর অপমানিত বোধ করে রমা রমেশকে বাঁধা দেওয়ার জন্য তৎপর হয়। এই রকম দৃশ্য দেখে রমা পীরপুরের লাঠিয়াল আকবরকে বাঁধ পাহারা দেওয়ার কথা বলে। একশো বিঘা জমির মধ্যে কুড়ি জন চাষির ফসল ছিল। তা রমেশকে জানায় আর বলে বর্ষার ফলে জমির খাল নষ্ট হয়ে গেছে। তা জল বের করার ব্যবস্থা করা হোক। কিন্তু বেণী ঘোষাল আবার বাঁধ আটকে রেখেছে। আবার বেণী ঘোষালের সেই বাঁধেমাছ চাষ হত তাই সে বাঁধ কাটবে না বলে, কিন্তু সেই দক্ষিণ দিকের বাঁধ কাটলে বেণীর মাছ চাষ করায় রমেশকে সেই বাঁধ কাটতে দিবে না। কিন্তু রমেশ বলে মাছ চাষের ক্ষতি হলেও চাষিদের অন্নসংস্থানের বেশি ক্ষতি হবে। তাই সে বেণী ঘোষালকে বলে দেয় যে সে বাঁধ কাটবে আবার বেণী বলে বাঁধ কাটলে মাছ সব জমির ওপর ভেসে উঠবে। এতে তার দুশো-তিনশো টাকার ক্ষতি হবে। অর্থ লোলুপ বেণী তা কখনই মানতে চাননি। কিন্তু অত্যাচারিত বেণী ঘোষাল-এর মতলব অন্যরকম সে ভেবেছিল চাষের জমি ডুবে গিয়ে চাষিরদের দুঅবস্থা হত তখন তারা তার কাছে এসে জমি বন্ধক দিয়ে টাকা ধার নিত, সে সুযোগে তার অর্থলাভ হত।

     এরকম ভাবনা বেণী ঘোষালের ছিল তা রমেশ বুঝতে পারে তখন রমেশের মধ্যে ঘৃণা ও লজ্জা বোধে ক্রোধে উত্তপ্ত হয়ে উঠে। রমেশ যখন বাঁধ কাটছিল, তখন রমা ও বেণী ঘোষালের পীরপুরের লাঠিয়াল আকবরকে বাঁধ পাহারা দেওয়ার জন্য পাঠায়। রমেশকে বাঁধ কাটা থেকে আকবর ও তার ছেলেরা বাঁধা দেয়। রমেশ বলে বাঁধ কাটতে না দিলে গ্রামের সব লোক মারা যাবে তাই কাটতেই হবে। আকবরকে বলে তোর গায়েও তো জমিজমা আছে তা সেটা বুঝে দেখ এই কথা শুনে রমেশের ওপর যখন লাঠির আঘাত করে। তখন রমেশও পাল্টা লাঠি চালায় তাতে আকবর ধরাশায়ী হয়। আকবরের মুখে প্রকাশ পায় রমেশের বীরত্বের কথা। ‘আকবর আলী এবার চোখ খুলিয়া সোজা হয়ে বসে বলল – “সাবাশ, হাঁ-মায়ের দুধ খেয়েছিল বটে ছোট বাবু।” এরূপ কারণের জন্য বেণী ঘোষালর বলে রমেশের নামে মিথ্যা নালিশ করতে কিন্তু তারা তা মানে না। তারা বলে দোষী হলে শাস্তি পেতে পারে। কিন্তু মিথ্যা নালিশ করবে না। রমেশের নামে কেউ নালিশ করতে চাইল না। তখন রমার বুকের ওপর থেকেও পাষাণের ভার চলে গেল। রমা বেণী ঘোষালের পক্ষেথেকে রমেশকে যতই বিপদে ফেলুক না রমেশের প্রতি রমার ভালোবাসা শ্রদ্ধা থেকে গেছে।

He informs Ramesh and says that the land canal has been destroyed due to monsoon. Let it be drained. But Beni Ghoshal blocked the dam again. Again Beni Ghoshal used to cultivate the dam, so he said that he will not cut the dam, but if the dam on the south side is cut, Ramesh will not be allowed to cut the dam because of Beni's fish farming. But Ramesh says that even if there is a loss in fish farming, the food security of the farmers will be more affected. So he tells Beni Ghoshal that he will cut the dam and Beni says that if the dam is cut, the fish will float all over the land. It will cost him two hundred to three hundred rupees. Money greedy Beni never wanted to accept that. But the oppressed Beni Ghoshal had a different idea. He thought that the farmers would be in dire straits when the agricultural land was submerged, then they would come to him and borrow money by mortgaging the land, he would get money from that opportunity.

      Ramesh realizes that Beni Ghosal had such thoughts, then Ramesh gets hot with anger, feeling disgust and shame. While Ramesh was cutting the embankment, Rama and Beni Ghoshal sent Lathial Akbar of Pirpur to guard the embankment. Akbar and his sons prevent Ramesh from cutting the dam. Ramesh says if the dam is not cut all the people of the village will die so it has to be cut. He says to Akbar that you also have land, understand that when he hears this, he hits Ramesh with a stick. Then Ramesh also hit back and Akbar was caught. Ramesh's bravery was revealed in Akbar's mouth. Akbar Ali now opened his eyes and sat up straight and said - "Hello, little baby who drank mother's milk."
