পরিবেশের সঙ্গে সার্থক সংগতি বিধানের ক্ষেত্রে সামাজিক উপাদান এবং শক্তিগুলির স্থান বিশেষ গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। তাই ব্যক্তিত্ব গঠনে সামাজিক পরিবেশের ভূমিকা অত্যন্ত গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। আধুনিক মনোবিজ্ঞানীরা বিশেষ বিশেষ গোষ্ঠীর মধ্যে ব্যক্তির নিজের স্থান নির্ণয় করার জন্য বিভিন্ন পদ্ধতি আবিষ্কার করেছেন। একটি বিশেষ দলের অন্তর্গত বিভিন্ন ব্যক্তির মধ্যে বিভিন্ন সম্পর্ক থাকে। যেমন – ব্যাক্তি কি রকম, ব্যক্তির সঙ্গে সমাজের সম্পর্ক কতখানি প্রভৃতি।

ব্যক্তির এই সম্পর্ক বৈচিত্র্যকে একটি চিত্রের আকারে প্রকাশ করা হয়েছে। এই চিত্রটিকে বলা হয় সোসিওগ্রাম। ব্যক্তি ও সমাজের মধ্যে সম্পর্ক নির্ণয় করার এই পদ্ধতিকে সমাজমিতি পদ্ধতি বলে। এই পদ্ধতির মধ্যে উল্লেখযোগ্য হল সমাজ অবস্থান মূলক অভিক্ষা ( Situational Test) এবং সোসিওগ্রাম (Sociogram)। এই পদ্ধতি সর্বপ্রথম উল্লেখ করেন J. L. Moreno নামে এক সমাজবিজ্ঞানী।

Sociometry: 

The location of social elements and forces is particularly important in establishing a meaningful relationship with the environment. So the role of social environment in personality formation is very important. Modern psychologists have developed a variety of methods for determining a person's place within a particular group. Different individuals belonging to a particular group have different relationships. For example - what is the person like, what is the relationship between the person and the society etc.

This relational diversity of individuals is expressed in the form of an image. This diagram is called a sociogram. This method of determining the relationship between individual and society is called sociometric method. Notable among these methods are the Situational Test and the Sociogram. This method was first mentioned by a sociologist named J. L. Moreno.
